The Scientific Secretariat of the viWTA is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the viWTA. It co-ordinated the research and coaches the participation of the public. The guidelines for its activities are laid down in the mission statement summarizing the essential functions and goals of the viWTA:
"The Flemish Institute for Science and Technology Assessment is an independent and autonomous institution, associated with the Flemish Parliament. Its research focuses on the social aspects of scientific and technological developments.
Its research is conducted on the basis of study and analysis, by structuring and encouraging the public debate, by observing scientific and technological developments at home and abroad, by carrying out prospective research about these developments, by informing target groups, and by advising the Flemish Parliament on the basis of these activities.
Through these activities the viWTA wishes to raise the quality of the public debate and to provide a solid foundation for a well-informed process of policy-making."
